A Word I Needed to Hear — Maybe You Do Too

Growing Through the Hard Stuff This Season

[Hey Reader!

As we get closer to Thanksgiving, my heart has been heavier than I expected. Grief is funny like that — it comes in waves and cycles. Lately it feels like I’ve entered “round 2” of acute grief. I’ve been thinking more about what could have been. The milestones. The celebrations. The sweet moments I imagined having with Myla this holiday season. I see all the little babies, and can’t help but imagine what should have around the 3 month mark with Myla…

This week, a lovely older gentleman said something that stopped me in my tracks:

“God creates beauty from the ashes.”
It immediately reminded me of Isaiah 61:3:

“…to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning…”
Isaiah 61:3

He also reminded me that while we don’t fully understand heaven, we will know our loved ones there — because Scripture promises that we will be fully known, fully restored, and reunited.

“Then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”
1 Corinthians 13:12

And David spoke with certainty about seeing his child again:

“I shall go to him…”
2 Samuel 12:23

Those words brought peace to my heart this week — maybe they will for you too.

Navigating Grief During the Holidays

If you’re walking through loss or hardship, the holidays can sharpen the ache. Here are a few traps to be aware of — and gentle ways to help your heart:

1. Don’t isolate — connect instead.

Grief begs us to withdraw, but connection helps us breathe again. The Bible also calls us to fellowship with other believers, so reach out to a friend. Let someone pray for you. Accept help, but even better, ask for help! If you don’t have someone to reach out to, I would be honored if you reached out to me. I’d love to listen ❤️

2. Let gratitude sit beside grief, not replace it.

You don’t have to choose one or the other.
God holds space for all of it. The two are not mutually exclusive. More often than not, the days where I’m grieving the most are the days I’m equally grateful.

3. Guard your heart against comparison.

Holiday photos, parties, perfect moments, baby snuggles…
Those can feel like salt on a tender wound.
Look up, not around. Hold on to God’s promises.

4. Hold tight to the hope of eternity.

“…that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.”
1 Thessalonians 4:13

Our grief is real — but so is our hope.

  • “Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”1 Peter 5:7
