Four students showed up on the first day of my small-group class this year. Three were chatty and ready to go, but the fourth was quiet. Reserved. She was the kind of student who sits a little further back and watches before deciding whether it’s safe to participate.
Life
We started with our math norms: we share our answers out loud, we talk through our thinking, and getting something wrong is completely okay, because mistakes are how our brains grow.
That last part is where she got stuck.
I could see it on her face that she wanted to answer, but the risk felt too big. What if she was wrong? What if the other students judged her? So she held back and waited, letting the other three go first.
And then something happened.
One of the outgoing students gave a wrong answer, and I celebrated it. “That’s a great mistake, I’m so glad you said that!” I said. “Your brain just grew. Let’s look at why that didn’t work.” Another student had made the same mistake, and suddenly there was this solidarity in the room. We were all learning together. Wrong answers weren’t dangerous. They were just… part of the process.
By the end of that class, my reserved student was raising her hand, volunteering, even! She was visibly more relaxed.
She didn’t need math to be a party: she needed to know it was safe to be wrong.

That safety is the foundation everything else gets built on, and it matters even more when variables show up.
When you throw in letters (variables), that’s the moment where the rules seem to change. Numbers become letters, arithmetic becomes algebra, and for a lot of students, this is exactly where they decide they’re “not a math person,” and who can blame them? “x” can be 5 in one problem and 8 in another? Who decided that was a thing?
Most curricula introduce variables like this: “A variable is a letter that stands for an unknown number.” Then the student is solving for x before they understand what it means for a letter to represent a quantity in the first place.
Variables are about relationships.
When we write 2x, we’re saying “two times some number,” and that’s true no matter what the number is. A student who understands that can think algebraically. A student who skips straight to memorizing steps can follow procedures for a while, but eventually the problems look different enough that the steps fall apart.
And if that student doesn’t feel safe making mistakes? They won’t ask the questions that build real understanding. They’ll freeze, the same way my reserved student almost did on day one.
Here’s a question worth asking your student: “What does 3x mean?” If they say “three times x,” follow up with “What does that actually mean?” If they can’t explain it in terms of a relationship or a quantity, camp out there before moving forward.

Grace
Variables represent something that’s true regardless of what the specific value turns out to be. It’s a relationship that holds no matter what.
God’s love for us is like that. It’s constant, regardless of your child’s report card or how confident you feel as a teacher. The one thing in the equation that never moves. And you know what, that’s a great way to bring faith into your math lesson! You can say, “You know what, this number can represent God’s love that never changes. This letter? The number changes depending on the situation, but it always represents something, just like the names of God might change, his character never does.”

Whatever feels unknown right now, it doesn’t change that. ❤️
